A Theremin Duet with a Robot

An art-meets-technology installation featuring a human and humanoid robot performing the Flower Duet from Lakmé by Léo Delibes on two theremins. In 2023, thereminist Carolina Eyck collaborated with Ameca, the advanced humanoid robot developed by Engineered Arts, as part of a smart city showcase created with Waiys and SpiNNcloud.

Using Eyck’s system of eight theremin finger positions, translated into robotic movement sequences, Ameca was programmed to perform on the touchless electronic instrument. After extensive calibration, programming, and rehearsal, the project culminated in what may be the first theremin duet between a human and humanoid robot.

The installation explores the boundaries between human and machine performance, offering an experimental glimpse into human–robotic collaboration in music, technology, and performance.

About

Carolina Eyck is one of the world’s leading theremin virtuosi and a pioneer in the technique of playing the instrument. At the age of 16, she developed her own groundbreaking method, the „8-finger position technique“, which revolutionized how theremin is played and is now considered the standard for thereminists around the world.

Born near Berlin, Germany, Carolina had a musical family, and was introduced to theremin at the age of 7 by her parents. Her musical career spanning three decades, she has since performed as a soloist with major orchestras around the world, such as the BBC Philharmonie and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, collaborating with renowned composers and premiering numerous theremin concertos written specifically for her.

Continuing to expand and explore the possibilities of the instrument, Carolina Eyck has composed an impressive collection of music of her own, spanning from concertos to film score and electronic music. On her recorded albums she integrates the theremin with her voice and electronic sounds with samples and loops.

Carolina is also a mentor, passionate about sharing her knowledge with thereminists keen to learn from her. She is dedicated to teaching and has held theremin masterclasses and workshop in on almost every continent, working actively to educate and expand the global theremin community.

Leon Theremin

The theremin is an electronic musical instrument invented by the Russian physicist Leon Theremin in 1920. The fact that it is played without physical touch makes it particularly unique.

A theremin typically consists of a box with two metal antennas which create electromagnetic fields. The antennas recognize the position of the musician and by changing their hand positions and the distance to the instrument, sound is controlled. The upright antenna controls the pitch. The higher the right hand approaches the antenna, the higher the pitch gets. The loop antenna enables the musician to control the volume, making the volume softer as they get closer to it.

MENTOR

Method

At the age of 16, Carolina Eyck developed a pioneering playing technique, called the 8 finger position technique. She published the first extensive theremin method book entitled "The Art of Playing the Theremin" in 2006.

With this technique the player is able to tune the theremin to their hand and rely on their finger positions, rather than correcting notes after they are audible. This method is now being used by thereminists around the world and has revolutionized how the instrument is played.

Lessons and Workshops

The passion for musical education is at the core of Carolina Eyck work. She has conducted workshops, lectures and master classes worldwide. From the ground-breaking theremin method book she wrote to an inspiring TEDx talk and private lessons she offers, Carolina creates a safe and inspiring space to explore the art of playing the theremin. Lessons are available to theremin players at all levels and can be held online or in person.
