A Theremin Duet with a Robot

An art-meets-technology installation featuring a human and humanoid robot performing the Flower Duet from Lakmé by Léo Delibes on two theremins. In 2023, thereminist Carolina Eyck collaborated with Ameca, the advanced humanoid robot developed by Engineered Arts, as part of a smart city showcase created with Waiys and SpiNNcloud.

Using Eyck’s system of eight theremin finger positions, translated into robotic movement sequences, Ameca was programmed to perform on the touchless electronic instrument. After extensive calibration, programming, and rehearsal, the project culminated in what may be the first theremin duet between a human and humanoid robot.

The installation explores the boundaries between human and machine performance, offering an experimental glimpse into human–robotic collaboration in music, technology, and performance.

New work for Theremin and Orchestra

My piece Ocean Light for Theremin and Orchestra is now available to watch online. Performed with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under the direction of Daníel Bjarnason, this recording was filmed during Sven Helbig’s “Schöne Töne Live” on October 24, 2025, at Haus des Rundfunks Berlin.

Ocean Light is a gentle tide that embraces the listener with a warm flow of waves, with the orchestra creating the constant sounds of the sea as a meditative backdrop. As the theremin peacefully enters, it carries the light and calmness of life under water, presenting moments of the curious fish swarms drifting and playing with the reflections. Let the rich life and sounds of the underwater world carry you on a floating reverie until we pierce the surface and hear the seagulls sing.

This performance holds a special place in my heart, as it was also marking my 30-year artist anniversary of playing the theremin! I hope you enjoy watching and listening as much as I enjoyed performing it.
